Primary Responsibilities

This position has generalist responsibilities for the site(s) coordination and management of all Health, Safety and Environmental management system.

Reporting to

  • Operations Manager
  • Indirect report to the Area HSE Manager Oilsands, Director of Health, Safety & Environment - SGS Canada

Specific responsibilities

  • Disseminate information from corporate HSE.
  • Provide staff with information concerning internal Health and Safety policies.
  • Support national H&S strategies that enable the Company to adapt to future organizational needs and requirements.
  • Promote positive Employee relations to strengthen Employee and Organizational commitment.
  • Reports any Health, Safety or Environmental incidents, accidents or concerns to the Branch/Operations Manager and the Director of Health, Safety & Environment for action.
  • Supports Internal HSE Audit processes.
  • Demonstrates good and safe work habits and enforces a clean working environment.
  • Accountable for the delivery of the New Employee H&S orientation program.
  • Manages paper flow of all HSE and Administrative systems and processes, which include Management of Change, Field Level Hazard Assessments, Job Safety Analyses, Loss Prevention Observations, Hazard Identifications, Near Misses, Safe Work Permitting, Isolation of Energy Information, Lockout-Tagout, Working Alone, Incident Reporting, Fleet Management and Safety Force Reporting.
  • Carries out and completes all on-site Incident Investigations, and updates HSE Incident Database.
  • Maintains all site Health and Safety statistics.
  • Responsible for Maintaining the Training Matrix, and for coordinating all HSE-related training.
  • Modified Work Programs and Early & Safe Return to Work strategies. Works with management and the Director of Health, Safety & Environment on this.
  • Lead the Emergency Response training, coordination and leadership.
  • Assist Branch/Operations Manager with the completion of Report Card Duties.
  • Applies EMFOS training knowledge daily in leading presentations and Safety Meetings with staff, and in demonstrating field safety leadership.
  • Carries out Workplace Observations and Interventions on a frequent basis.
  • Inventory control of PPE.
  • Trained to perform fit testers.
  • Delivers regulatory WHMIS training.
  • Responsible to upload new/revised area safety procedures and SOP’s to local folders and HS&E site.
  • Familiar with environmental waste management requirements such as the Transportation Dangerous Goods and Manifesting, Waste generation registration for hazardous waste, Provincial documentation such as HWIN in Ontario.
  • Hazard assessments, improving equipment, processes and procedures as well as job Safety analysis.
  • Participate, co-present or co-ordinate Health and Safety training sessions for management, supervision and hourly personnel on various Health and Safety topics.
  • Implementing and delivering programs such as confined space, energy control, fall protection and machine guarding.
  • Attend Health and Safety courses and seminars to keep current with acceptable Health and Safety and environmental practices.
  • Assist with claims management when required to meet the necessary Workplace Safety and Insurance Board requirements.
  • Act as the company representative during Ministry of Labour inspections and investigations.
  • Co-ordinate monthly Health and Safety meetings.
  • May be assigned special or ad hoc projects, periodically.

  • Health and Safety experience in a medium or large-size industrial or professional services environment is a strong asset.
  • Previous Health and Safety training experience is a strong asset.
  • Must have a proactive Health and Safety attitude.
  • Must have valid and up-to-date First Aid training.
  • Understanding of the Health, Safety and Environment national requirements and how the general provincial legislation applies to the SGS HSE program.
  • Superior organizational, communications, and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must be proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.).
  • A solid understanding of MS Project Management and Oracle applications would also be an asset.
  • Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills including grammar and composition.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health and Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
