SGS Polymer Solutions is a materials testing laboratory specializing in polymer science. Located in Christiansburg, VA our lab serves numerous mainstream industries including medical devices/pharmaceuticals, consumer products, aerospace, specialty packaging and industrial manufacturing of polymeric materials. 

The Associate Scientist - Chromatography position is responsible for performing analysis using chromatography methods and instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform assigned tasks using chromatography methods and instruments:
    • Setup and calibrate instruments, prepare and run client samples.
    • Analyze the instrument data using qualitative and quantitative methods.
    • Report in writing the results of the tasks for the project managers to include in the project reports.  This includes method details to express what was done, the observations, the results and applicable analysis.
  • Assist lab manager/lead/senior technician with maintenance and qualification of specified pieces of equipment
  • Contribute to laboratory organization including maintaining inventories of supplies, cleaning glassware, and safely disposing of chemicals.
  • Assist with sample management.
  • Assist lab manager/lead/senior technician with development, documentation, and validation of test methods and procedures.
  • Develop own expertise in chromatography techniques.
  • Understand and meet the quality requirements required for the equipment, methods, and assigned tasks.


To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Education - Completed B.S. degree in chemistry or a related science.
  • Computer Skills - Experienced in the use of standard computer programs including Windows, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 
  • Communication - Excellent oral and written communication skills, presenting information in a logical and organized manner.
  • Attention to Detail - Individual must carefully follow procedures, and maintain thorough and detailed records in the laboratory notebook.
  • Quality-the individual understands and works within the PSI quality system in the performance of all work, exhibiting accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Safety and Security-the individual actively promotes and personally observes safety and security procedures and requirements.
