A day in the life of Business Development Manager at SGS Canada:

  • Ensure clients that SGS has a deep and current understanding of the cannabis industry and the challenges and opportunities of cannabis producers and manufacturers, with emphasis on areas in which the company can provide value.
  • Participate in company’s marketing strategy and tactics, including website, social media, industry events and direct interaction with clients and industry stakeholders.
  • Lead efforts to identify and engage potential clients, assess value, negotiate service agreements and manage client relationships.
  • Maintain close working relationships with company operations management to ensure alignment between market opportunities, business development activities and operations capabilities.
  • Maintain a client relationship management (CRM) system to ensure visibility of sales pipelines and transactions.
  • Identify new service offerings, business lines, technologies and segments that present opportunities for company growth.
  • Identify and evaluate partnership opportunities that enable the company to expand its offerings and create incremental value for clients and shareholders.


Ideal Candidate:

  • Graduate degree (MSc,) in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, biology).
  • At least 5 years experience in a business development role involving Sales, relationship building with clients, contract negotiation and account management.
  • Understanding of analytical technologies and methods used in pharmaceutical, health product and/or agri-food industries, particularly HPLC and mass spectrometry.
  • Working knowledge of the cannabis sector – major companies, business models, stakeholders, regulatory environment, etc.
  • Proven ability to prospect and close new customers and accounts in a competitive landscape.
  • Experience maintaining and optimizing client relationship management systems and processes for the purposes of managing and reporting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to develop and maintain relationships with clients, partners, stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Flexibility to take on new assignments and support or lead strategic projects beyond the basic responsibilities of the role.
