Laboratory QC technician is responsible for performing routine sample decompositions and leaches on geological materials in accordance with client work order instructions and laboratory quality guidelines and procedures. Also operate analytical instruments, oversee QC data, sample reporting, and assist Supervisor in method development and provide backup in the supervisor’s absence.



  • Perform a variety of decomposition and leaching methods as per SGS’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). These will include acid digests, selective leaches, fusions and others as required
  • Calibrate, operate and maintain analytical instruments including, ISE, IC and others and perform classical analytical methods as required and verify results.
  • Make basic and complex reagents as necessary including MMI solution, IC and titrants  
  • Provides feedback to supervisors and/or group leader regarding any issues encountered during procedures. E.g. unanticipated reactions, loss of samples etc
  • Assist Chemists and Supervisors with method development and validations and provide feedback on results.
  • Verify and adjust calibrations on a variety of lab equipment including dispensers, pipettes, balances and other.
  • Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered into SLIMS as necessary.
  • Work with the QC Manager to resolve QA/QC issues and follow up with CAPA reports
  • Ensure chemical inventory and consumables list updated monthly
  • Maintain clean and organized workbench area ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; disposal is handled according to laboratory procedures including any special requirements for handling international soils.
  • Clean lab ware as required
  • Ensure that equipments are maintained in good order making the supervisor or group leader aware of any damaged or defective equipment or any equipment requiring complex adjustment.
  • Assist supervisor in procurement of consumables and other laboratory items as required
  • Keep SOPs and Quality Manual binders current with the newest versions,.
  • Adhere to assigned working hours unless otherwise approved by the Supervisor

·         May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections when required.

  • May be assigned to assist other technicians when required

·         Work is performed and decisions/problems are solved in accordance with client work order instructions and laboratory quality guidelines and procedures.

·         Strictly follows the latest approved version of methods and SOPs and/or supervisors direct instructions.

·         Maybe required to trouble shoot instrumentation and other equipment.

·         The incumbent is expected to be able to identify errors in their work, process or sample defects and then immediately inform the Group Leader/ Supervisor with a suggestion for the likely cause and possible solutions.

·         Provide feedback to the supervisor regarding method improvements.

·         Does not conduct any work or tests without authorized training and instruction on latest reversions.

·         Proficiency must be demonstrated according in training matrix before technician can work independently. This may involve visual inspection of their work by the supervisor or group leader or analytical testing of products produced.

·         Contacts supervisor/Group Leader if there are any doubts regarding incumbent’s ability to fulfill test requirements satisfactorily.

·         Responsible for the safe keeping, accuracy and completeness (including tracking/reasons for any changes).

·         Multi tasking is often required and good time management is essential

·         Responsible for ensuring that samples are processed in the correct sequence as per client instructions and that procedures are correct for meeting client requirements

·         May be required to perform a number of different procedures in a single day

·         Position is required to enter the correct QC data into SLIMS and report failures to the supervisor or group leader immediately.

·         The incumbent is expected to work independently or together with a supervisor and other technicans on a regular basis and must meet the required sample turnaround time and productivity expectations set by the supervisor.

  • Education: Minimum degree or diploma (or equivalent) in Chemistry related field is required.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education.
  • Strong analytical and mechanical skills and ability to trouble shoot basic instrumentation.
  • Good hand/eye coordination when handling samples & lab equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine bench tests
  • A willingness to learn new analytical tests, instrumentation and procedures
  • Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
  • Candidates must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
  • Proven time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure.
  • Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
  • Travel to other SGS locations or client location may be required.
  • Ensures full compliance with the company’s Health & Safety, Code of Integrity, and Professional Conduct policies.
  • Must use good judgment to identify and resolve problems on the job.  When in difficulty refer problems to his/her supervisor for resolution.
  • Intermediate level of creativity required in solving routine problems.
  • Proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to work well with others & independently.
