The Sr. Applications Engineer will play a leading role in managing testing activities at the SGS Columbus laboratories. The role will present an opportunity to lead with a focus on safety, continuous improvement, communication and strategic thinking. In addition this position will play a key role in expanding the current capabilities of the laboratory through capital expansion initiatives. The position is expected to operate with high degree of autonomy and will be a critical stakeholder in the financial and technical performance of the laboratory.

Typical duties will include: oversight of project execution in coordination with shift leaders (priority setting, resource utilization, etc.), process improvement to close gaps in laboratory capabilities and customer requirements, and design and implementation of new laboratory spaces / capabilities. This position may lead a  team of engineers and technicians depending on experience. 

Testing will focus on component, heavy-duty engine and vehicle testing, but may involve testing a broad range of engine types. Projects may include performance and emissions development, calibration, and/or validation and compliance testing. In some cases, test results will be used to demonstrate emissions conformity to state and federal agencies, and will be conducted in compliance with 40 CFR Part 1065 and other relevant regulations.

Leadership Responsibilities:

·         Provide leadership to install, improve, and commission advanced instruments / systems, partnering with other groups

·         Coordinate with SGS senior management on fiscal planning, involved in tracking

·         group’s expenses and revenues, exploring new and innovative ways to reduce cost and keep the organization on track financially

·         Utilize methods such as cost-benefit analysis to improve efficiency

·         Seek opportunities to improve the safety of the laboratories and processes

·         Provide daily task management for the testing services team

·         Lead technicians to maintain optimal test cell operation per company and customer requirements

·         Promote managerial excellence by improving existing ISO 17025 quality management system towards reducing test void rates and improving utilization of all engine test cells in multiple locations

 

Technical Responsibilities:

·         Oversee project execution in coordination with shift leaders, including priority setting and resource utilization

·         Identify gaps in laboratory capabilities and customer requirements, and lead efforts to close them.

·         Support efforts to improve laboratory quality and service offerings

·         Provide technical support to SGS sales team in defining engineering labor and laboratory equipment needs

·         Support the development of new work instructions and revision of existing work instructions for standard laboratory procedures

·         Work with customers to define test requirements and develop test plans

·         Provides engineering services to customers, including control system calibration and development

·         Analyze test results to determine pass/fail, root cause, and next steps if applicable

·         Create and develop visual presentations, progress reports, quotes, other documents for leadership team

·         Develop and carry out tasks to continuously improve the safety of the operation

·         Participate in building business opportunities with key customers by providing superior service and technical expertise

 

Profile:

·         B.S. Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred)

·         M.S. Engineering preferred

·         Minimum five years’ relevant experience with expertise in engine/vehicle testing procedures and technology

·         Experience with leadership, coaching, and mentoring experience with focus on employees’ development

·         Outstanding computer skills and computer programming skills

·         Ability to approach problems in a scientific manner and complete tasks with minimal guidance

·         Desire to work in Columbus, IN area

·         Willing to travel up to 10% of the time

 

Required Skills:

·         Outstanding leadership experience and abilities, comfortable in dealing with varied engineers’ personalities providing coaching, mentoring, support to those in his/her group as well as others in the organization

·         Outstanding computer skills and computer programming skills

·         Strong Verbal & Written Communication skills

·         Desire to work in fast-paced, rapidly changing and results’ oriented environment

·         High ability to manage time to prioritize competing tasks and demands being able to successfully resolve them

·         Ability to approach problems in a scientific manner and implement resolutions with minimal guidance

·         Ability to effectively communicate and articulate ideas, operational, and test quality issues to engineers and managers

·         Ability to diagnose test operations problems using scientific principles and lead team to implement effective solution

·         Subject matter expert for engine testing, focused on performance and exhaust emissions

·         Be accountable for meeting engine test and development project objectives and meeting quality objectives

·         Expert knowledge of engine operation and controls for exhaust emissions (gasoline, diesel, natural gas)

·         Working knowledge of engine calibration software and hardware tools

·         Responds quickly to emergency situations, assisting staff in maintaining readiness to respond to emergencies

·         In accordance with SGS HSE Mgmt. System requirements, disposes, or directs the disposal of waste generated daily, in compliance with all waste transportation and disposal regulations and requirements

·         Reports all safety incidents (actuals and near misses) in accordance with SGS Incident Reporting requirements

·         Uses all equipment (e.g.: safety-related) as intended, reporting damaged/lost equipment to supervisor

·         Maintains awareness of hazards & proposes controls to supervisor, HSE representative, relevant client/site contact

·         Actively participates in incident investigations and risk assessments as deemed necessary by SGS management

 

Other Information:

·         Valid driving license

·         Ability and willingness to travel, sometimes on short notice

·         Reliable transportation

·         Must successfully pass drug test and background check
