Job Description:

The purpose of this role is to ensure the needs of the internal or external clients are met through proper planning, design and delivery of engine and vehicle testing system and facilities, with consideration of the client’s budget, schedule, and other project specific requirements.

 

The following responsibilities are typical of this position, but are not all encompassing.  The primary responsibility is carrying out the work required to deliver a quality project within budget and on schedule.

 
Responsibilities:
  • Assist the project manager and participate on a team during the initial phases of client needs assessments, facility condition assessments, and the development of the owner’s project requirements.
  • Interpret client’s requirements and work within the project constraints to lead the design effort to develop solution options.
  • Delivery of concept level calculations and drawings related to the options being considered.
  • Lead the mechanical engineering team, both internal and external, during the development of the selected design concepts.
  • Support the project team as they create concept phase budgets using internal resources, as well as suppliers and contractors.
  • Assist the project manager during the project implementation phase by securing and managing the right internal and external mechanical engineering resources, partners, consultants, suppliers and contractors that will create the detailed construction documents.
  • Provide technical oversight of the detailed mechanical design with a focus on ensuring the design efforts and deliverables align with the owner’s project requirements and the conceptual design intent. 
  • Construction phase support including RFIs, submittals, and other communication with both the design team and the contractors.
  • If needed, perform on site reviews of mechanical and controls and other systems during the construction process.
  • Assist with the project commissioning, validation and support phases by reviewing the commissioning and validation plans, training programs and long term technical support strategies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in responding to unexpected demands due to changes in project scope or deadline.  Use strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks to effectively handle deadline pressures without creating workflow problems for others.
  • Work on multiple projects at a time, depending upon project size and deadline.
  • Participate in, or lead, the development and refinement of engineering processes and tools, and mentor others in the use of these processes and tools.
  • Participate in and support of business development efforts, primarily though client relationship management, but also including new client visits and proposal development as needed.

 


 
Qualifications:
  • PE in Mechanical Engineering, or on a path toward a PE.
  • Knowledge of engine, vehicle and component testing facilities, systems and equipment. Including by not limited to the mechanical system related to the following:

·         Facility utility systems (chilled water, compressed air, steam, etc.).

·         Ventilation systems required to support test as well as occupied areas.

·         Fuel, lube oil, and other fluid systems.

·         Cooling water systems.

·         Engine intake air, exhaust and after-treatment systems.

·         Material handling and mounting engines and support systems.

·         Engine and Vehicle Test Loading Equipment (dynamometers and load banks).

·         Safety system for personnel protection.

  • 5 or more years of experience in engineering within the area of automotive test systems or facilities.
  • Experience with the process of planning, designing, delivering, and commissioning technical facilities.
  • Customer-oriented, self-motivated, quality focused and responsive.
  • Strong communication skills, leading meetings and leading teams.
  • Travel to client & project sites as needed (approximately 4-7 days per month).
  • General knowledge of acceptable design and construction industry practices.
  • Proven record of excellent client, internal, supplier and subcontractor relationships.
