Laboratory Manager – Waihi




In conjunction with the Laboratory Manager and the other Waihi Management Team, to ensure efficient utilisation of site resources (staff and plant) thereby continually improving our customer service and to be ensure timely and accurate reporting of results at the Waihi Minerals Laboratory




  • Co-manage the HSE aspects of the Waihi Laboratory including health and safety software (Crystal) with the other Laboratory Management Team and the Laboratory Manager
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order
  • Work with senior staff to continuously  improve all aspects of quality at Waihi
  • Management of analytical services on four days on four days off roster. To be on call to assist the other shifts with any problems that may arise
  • Ensure all client demands are met as detailed in the various service contracts
  • To manage an effective and efficient laboratory service at the lowest possible cost
  • Ensure reporting deadlines are met
  • To work with the Laboratory Manager so as to maximise business returns whilst minimising exposure and risk for the company
  • Communicating to the appropriate staff and external clients as required
  • Comply with all SGS Operational Integrity and HR policies and procedures
  • Escalating problems to Senior Minerals Management if they arise to ensure compliance with Minerals governance procedures and / or dealing with the day-to-day issues in a professional and service focused manner
  • To work with the Quality / Technical Managers to develop and maximise quality, technical and training objectives
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager with staff management and development
  • Undertake all other relevant and reasonable work requests relevant to the position in consultation with the Laboratory Manager 




  • A minimum of three years of experience in a commercial laboratory environment laboratory environment
  • Proven supervisory or management experience to expert level including ability and experience in management reporting and checking technical data
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience and experience in management reporting and checking technical data
  • Tertiary qualifications in Science (Chemistry/GeoChem) or similar
  • Advanced computer literacy including using databases and excel spreadsheets
  • The knowledge and understanding of the quality requirements of a modern industrial laboratory including the LIMS
  • Understands the service and maintenance requirements of laboratory instruments
  • Full New Zealand driver licence
